Hi,

I am using NetOffice for the first time.

I am making an ASP.NET web site where on click of a button, I want to generate an Excel file in a password protected state and send it to the client to download it.

But I want to know whether, will I require MS Excel installed on the server?
OR Is there a way where I can make this work on a server where MS Excel is NOT installed?

Also what are other pre-requisites?

Yes, you will need to have Excel installed. NetOffice is just a COM wrapper for Office. Without Office it won't work.

ClosedXML allows you to create Excel 2007/2010 files without the Excel application. The typical example is creating Excel reports on a web server.

i agreed this. you may need to take a look to the ClosedXML project https://closedxml.codeplex.com
NO is a helper to create desktop addins. the ClosedXML project allows yout to create excel very very easy without excel because this means to manipulate some xml files(xlsx). a side effect: you need XL 2007 or higher.
